ELLIS Energy Consulting
Wholesale strategy for retail energy marketers
Pricing structures and supply hedging strategy, built to hold up under real market conditions.
I work with retail electricity and natural gas marketers on the decisions that sit underneath every customer offer: how the product is priced, how the supply behind it is hedged, and how that position is managed across the life of the book.

ABOUT::
Steve Ellis
Principal
I have spent my career on the supply side of retail energy — designing the pricing structures that sit behind fixed, variable and blended offers, and building the hedging programs that make those offers deliverable at the margin they were sold at.
Most of the work is unglamorous and consequential: reading market rules closely enough to know where a cost actually lands, modelling how a book behaves when load shape and weather diverge from plan, and finding the supply and transportation path that is genuinely cheapest rather than the one that looks cheapest on a screen.
My approach is analysis first, recommendation second. I would rather show a client the three structures that survive stress testing and explain the trade-offs than hand over a single answer with no working shown. The goal is that your team can defend the strategy internally — to risk, to finance, and to whoever signs off on the position.
SERVICES:
Four ways I work with marketers
Engagements are scoped to the book — a single product launch, a full hedging program review, or ongoing management of an existing portfolio.
Pricing structure design
Building the cost stack behind an offer: commodity, capacity, ancillaries, losses, transportation and the regulated adders that vary by market. We land on a structure that prices the risk you are actually taking on, with clear rules for when and how it gets repriced.
From $6,500 3–4 week engagement
Supply hedging strategy
Designing the hedging program for a book: tranche sizing, layering schedule, instrument selection across futures, physical baseload and shaped supply, and the balancing approach for swing and weather exposure. Delivered as a written policy your desk can execute against.
From $9,500. 4–6 week engagement
Price management
Reviewing how live prices are set and maintained — margin monitoring, reprice triggers, the gap between the curve you hedged on and the curve you are selling against today. Useful where offers have been in market long enough that the original assumptions have drifted.
From $4,000 2–3 week engagement
Long-term portfolio management
Ongoing management of the hedging program: monthly position and margin review, execution recommendations as the layering schedule advances, and a standing line for the decisions that come up between reviews. Structured as a retainer with a defined monthly deliverable.
From $3,500/month Retainer 6-month minimum
Fees are indicative. Every engagement is scoped after an initial conversation about the size and shape of the book — that first call is free and takes about thirty minutes.
WHAT CLIENTS CAN EXPECT:
Depth on the things that decide the outcome
Market rules read closely
Tariffs, settlement mechanics and regulated charges differ by jurisdiction and change more often than most pricing models assume. I work from the current rules, not last year’s spreadsheet.
Market conditions, not just curves
Forward curves are the starting point. Liquidity, basis behaviour, volatility and the shape of your own load all change what a given hedge is actually worth.
Supply and transportation options compared
Delivered cost depends on the path. I compare the realistic supply and transportation combinations available to you, including the ones that are inconvenient but cheaper.
Work you can hand to your risk committee
Every recommendation arrives with the analysis behind it — assumptions stated, alternatives shown, stress cases run — so it can be reviewed rather than taken on faith.
Contact
Start with a conversation about your book.
Tell me the markets you serve, roughly how large the position is, and what is prompting the review. Thirty minutes is usually enough to know whether there is work worth doing.
